Akira Toriyama, the mastermind behind Dragon Ball, an iconic and massively successful Japanese manga, has passed away at the age of 68.

Toriyama succumbed to an acute subdural hematoma, a severe form of bleeding near the brain, as confirmed by his studio on Friday.

Globally revered, Dragon Ball transcended its comic book origins, evolving into animated series and movies that captivated audiences worldwide.

Admirers of Toriyama are mourning the loss of a visionary who crafted narratives and characters that defined many people’s youth.

Since its inception in 1984, Dragon Ball has chronicled the adventures of Son Goku in his relentless pursuit of the mystical dragon balls, battling the formidable Saiyans to protect Earth.

At the time of his passing, Toriyama left behind several works in progress.

He departed this world on March 1st, with his funeral being a private ceremony attended by family and close friends only, as shared by the official Dragon Ball website.

“His future was bright with potential. He bequeaths a legacy of manga and artwork that will inspire generations,” remarked his studio.

The studio expressed hope for Toriyama’s imaginative universe to remain cherished universally for many years.

Social media platforms have been awash with tributes from fans.

A heartfelt message on X, swiftly gaining 500 likes, expressed gratitude: “Thank you for the manga that shaped my youth. Rest in peace, your efforts will not be forgotten.”

“The world has lost him too soon, leaving hearts heavy with sadness,” lamented another fan on the Japanese platform X.

“Akira’s creations will endure eternally. He gave us the ultimate anime hero,” another admirer commented.

Born in 1955 in Nagoya, Japan, Toriyama ventured into the manga industry in the early ’80s with Dr. Slump, portraying the whimsical adventures of a robotic girl, Arale, and her inventor.

His magnum opus, Dragon Ball, captured the imaginations of millions. Son Goku’s journey from a martial arts novice to a formidable hero resonated with fans worldwide, mirroring their personal battles and growth.

Dragon Ball has spurred a vibrant fan culture, including fan fiction and cosplay, with enthusiasts emulating the distinct hairstyles of its characters.

The series has been localized in numerous languages, and Dragon Ball merchandise, especially action figures, are treasured globally, from Japan to China and Southeast Asia.

In a 2013 conversation with the Japanese newspaper Asahi, Toriyama humbly pondered the phenomenal success of Dragon Ball.

Labeling the series as a fortunate anomaly, he shared, “It was unexpected, considering my complex, challenging personality, yet it enabled me to connect with society positively.”
