South Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS) has disclosed that North Korea has exported more than 1 million shells to Russia since early August. These shells were sent to support Russia’s military efforts in Ukraine, constituting a substantial contribution to the ongoing conflict, according to Yoo Sang-bum, a member of the ruling party and the parliamentary intelligence committee. Yoo revealed that the NIS briefing to lawmakers indicated that these shells could sustain the war between Russia and Ukraine for over two months, highlighting the significant scale of the export.
North Korea’s military factories are operating at maximum capacity to meet the demands of Russia for military supplies. This substantial export emphasizes the deepening ties between North Korea and Russia, raising concerns among international communities, particularly the United States and its allies.
The NIS also shared insights into North Korea’s other activities, indicating that the country is in the final stages of preparing for a satellite launch. Inspections are underway on the engine and launch device, suggesting a potential collaboration with Russia. While technical guidance from Russia has increased the likelihood of a successful launch, challenges in technology and funding persist. Critical aspects such as intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) re-entry and multiple warhead technologies remain unsecured, as per Yoo’s statements quoting the NIS.
The international community has expressed strong concerns about North Korea’s involvement in providing weapons to Moscow for use in the war in Ukraine. White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan warned North Korea of the consequences, asserting that such actions would not be received positively on the global stage.
There is growing apprehension regarding the technology North Korea seeks from Russia in exchange for weaponry. Pyongyang aims to advance its satellite and nuclear-powered submarine capabilities, areas where the regime lacks full development. This pursuit raises alarms among global powers, given the potential implications of North Korea enhancing its technological prowess in these sectors.
Ukraine faces challenges in acquiring adequate weapons and ammunition for a sustained counteroffensive against Russia. While there have been partial successes, such as in Robotyne in the Zaporizhzhia region, progress remains slow due to the shortage of essential resources.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky remains determined, stating that Ukraine is gradually pushing Russian forces out of its territory. The shortage of weapons and ammunition poses significant obstacles to these efforts. The situation underscores the urgent need for international cooperation and support to address the ongoing war and ensure peace and stability in the region.
